Consulting projects
Many of Amesbury's consulting assignments have been continuations and expansions of Connectivity Reports. They often fall into one of two categories; surveys or strategies.
OSP (outside plant) and telecommunications asset research
Amesbury researches, surveys and photographs telecommunications assets such as points of entry, duct banks and telecommunications rooms. Information about these facilities may reside with the building: manager, engineer, attorney or owner. Reviewing building Access Agreements and plans along with interviews and a site survey enable us to put a handle on a buildings connectivity.
Network latency research and strategies
Now that 10 Gbps has become what a DS3 was a few years ago and 40 Gbps is being talked about, latency ever more noticeable. Data centers serving the financial houses of New York for example, need to be in the 'Donut'. The 40KM band around lower Manhattan. It starts at 30KM which is outer limit of the blast zone and continues to 70 KM, where latency becomes unacceptable. There is some debate on the distances but end-users, network operators and equipment manufactures all agree that you can not get around the laws of physics, which makes fiber miles crucial.
The Donut
Sourcing dark and dim fiber and managed wave solutions
Access to dark fiber is a huge differentiating factor for a property, it enables any telecommunications carrier to serve a customer at that location. Dark fiber can be also be leased by tenant. It is attractive to the enterprise as it allows for optimum network control and security and can be cost effective for a bandwidth hogg.
Dim fiber or lambda allows an end user to lease a wavelength or color and place ther own equipment on either end. Lambda has similar features to dark fiber with less responsibility and cost.
Most national carriers now prefer to sell lambda or managed wave as it is higher on the value chain and selling dark fiber quickly uses up fiber count. In many markets dark fiber is only offered by regional or local carriers. Amesbury Consulting can track down dark fiber.
